Okeanus Science & Technology, LLC (Okeanus), an international provider of specialized ocean equipment and marine engineering services, recently supported the outfitting of a brand-new All American Marine 78’ x 26.7’ research vessel with a custom deck handling equipment package. The RV North Wind, recently delivered to California State Polytechnic University (Cal Poly) Humboldt, is a state-of-the-art semi-displacement catamaran equipped with the latest oceanographic equipment and handling systems designed for near-coastal and offshore marine survey operations.
“We were delighted to work with All American Marine on designing and manufacturing the optimal deck set up of winches, overboard sheaves, and control systems for this next-gen research vessel,” said Don Brockett, Chief Operating Officer at Okeanus.
Central to Cal Poly Humboldt’s requirements was efficient use of deck space, suited to a double drum winch: one drum with a 1,500 m of 3 conductor cable with an SWL of 1,500 lb—ideal for the deployment of CTDs, water samplers, and the towing of oceanographic equipment, such as side scan sonars and magnetometers—and an “electro-active” levelwind with a sheave and integrated cable data (speed and scope); the other drum, supporting 1,500 m of 3/8” synthetic line and a SWL rated to 5,000 lb, was designed to launch and recover box corers, gravity corers, and trawl nets, and features a “staggered roller” type levelwind to allow for the passage of shackles and other hardware.
Okeanus also supplied a small multi-purpose winch equipped with a sheave type levelwind with speed/scope data; two overboard sheaves, one a wide mouth trawl sheave with speed/scope/tension data integrated into it; and a fixed deck control station supplied with 6 joysticks, E-Stop, and cable data display—including a second data display mounted below deck in a dedicated lab space.
“The RV North Wind sets a new benchmark for modern multi-mission research vessels, a standard of excellence only achievable by pooling the right industry partners to collaborate on building a truly fit-for-purpose solution to the highest specifications. We are proud to have had the opportunity to plug in our engineering and manufacturing expertise into the delivery of deck handling equipment to support commercial and educational missions designed to conduct critical offshore research and environmental monitoring in challenging marine environments for years to come,” added Brockett.
