FROM WORKSHOP TO FIELD OPS #2: Compact Deck Winches
Welcome to the second installment of Okeanus’ new blog series, FROM WORKSHOP TO FIELD OPS, which profiles some of the innovative deck handling solutions that we design, engineer, and fabricate at our ISO 9001:2015 certified facility in Houston, Texas.
Over the last 18 months we have seen a pronounced uptick in demand for modular winches, and so this time around we showcase two of our most popular compact standard winches: our DT210 and DT305 models. These easy-to-transport deck handling systems are ideal for customers that rely on the capability to rapidly mobilize their survey equipment on vessels of opportunity, and are rugged and reliable enough to serve as permanent installations on survey and research vessels of any size. In 2024 alone, we have delivered ten units of each model to both government and commercial clients, and those winches join the hundreds of Okeanus winches that are operating amongst our global oceans and inland waterways today.
Both the DT210 and the DT305 winches are ideally suited to support shallow water geophysical and site characterization surveys, well logging services, and instrumentation for multidisciplinary oceanographic surveys. These models are equipped with a self-contained hydraulic power unit and are offered in ratings ranging from 5HP to 10HP. Designed in full accordance with ABS and DNV standards, both self-contained electro-hydraulic systems that can fit between 300 and 750 meters of .45” coax cable and can pull up to 1,500 lbs. at bare drum. These winches are true “plug and play” solutions in that they only require electrical service and space on the deck to operate as they are designed to.
The ability to seamlessly integrate these winches into almost any deck set up is the key to ensuring that our clients get the maximum utility from their investment, and the fact that they are constructed out of the best grade welded steel ensures they are built to last.
The standardized winch package is equipped with a self-contained hydraulic power unit, planetary gear box, failsafe braking system, variable speed controls, and emergency stop. In addition to these standardized features, customers can choose from the following additional options:
- Levelwind
- Tethered or wireless remote control
- Slip ring
- Personal guard
- Lebus grooved drum cover
- Overboarding sheave
- Instrumented sheave & cable data display
- Auxiliary hydraulic circuit
- Cable spooling & termination service
- Four-point lifting bridle
